Modem or access device

This connects the home to the service provider's network, although the technology varies by cable, fiber, DSL, fixed wireless or other service.

Router

This directs traffic between the home network and other networks and usually provides local network services.

Wi-Fi access point

This provides the wireless radio connection; it may be built into the router.

Gateway

Providers often supply one box that combines several of these roles.
