Use broad stable categories

A few categories such as school/work, household, photos and records often age better than dozens of tiny folders.

Name files for retrieval

Dates, project names and meaningful descriptions can make search more effective.

Avoid duplicate working copies

Copying the same file into many folders creates uncertainty about which version is current.

Back up important categories

Organization and backup solve different problems; neat folders do not protect against device failure.
